The ‘Low Down: Summer Urban Festivals

By REBECCA CHRISTOU

LONG gone are the days when a festival meant grimy portaloos, freezing nights in a tiny tent and three nights without a shower. As fun as a long weekend in wellies can be, the new generation of urban festivals are being welcomed with open arms in the capital.

All hail Wireless Festival, which made its debut appearance in 2005. Set in Hyde Park, you can rock up in an outfit that won’t get covered in beer and other people’s sweat and simply catch the last tube home afterwards. Sorted.

Wireless Festival

This year, the festival runs from Friday 6 July to Sunday 8 July, and features the huge headliners Drake and Rhianna. Also confirmed are Nicki Minaj, Rizzle Kicks, Professor Green and Jessie J – to name but a few. Check out the full lineup and grab tickets at www.wirelessfestival.co.uk before they’re all snapped up.

Also in London this summer is Radio 1′s Hackney Weekend, which arrives in – you guessed it – Hackney on Saturday 23rd June and Sunday 24th June. There are tons of acts already confirmed, including Bombay Bicycle Club, Deadmau5 and Lana Del Ray.

Tickets for the event are allocated at random, but if you happen to live in Hackney or any other Olympic borough, there are a certain number of tickets reserved for you, so make sure you upload your details!

To be in the running for tix, all you need to do is register by the 19th of March. Best of all, the tickets are free, and all you need to pay is a teeny postage fee. Plus, there’s no need for a babywipe and deodorant shower between acts. What’s not to love?
